More Than 1/5th of Greenhouse Gas Emissions Are From Our Food Systems Globally.

Estimates of the GHG emissions from our food systems globally vary from 19% to 29% (1). The bulk of these GHG are from agriculture production (80% to 86%); other contributions are from fertilizer manufacture, food processing and packaging, refrigeration, transport, retail, catering, home food management and waste disposal.  The contribution of food systems to U.S. GHG emissions is estimated at 9% (2).
